School-based OT focuses on helping students within the school environment to develop the skills they need to succeed academically and socially. It aims to enable students to perform daily school activities more effectively and independently. Addressing skills such as fine motor functioning, sensory processing, self-care, social skills, and cognitive skills. OT’s work closely with students and educators to create individualised strategies that adapt the learning environment to meet the students' needs, ensuring they can access and participate in educational programs safely and independently.
Some areas OT can support:
Fine motor skills (muscles of the upper body/hands)
Visual motor (hand-eye coordination)
Visual perception (how the brain processes information it gets from the eyes)
Bilateral coordination (how the hands work together)
Sensory processing (how the body processes information through all senses)
Personal care (having an understanding and awareness of the body and personal hygiene)
Emotional regulation (understanding the different emotions and learning how to express them safely and appropriately)
Behavioural support (further support on expressing larger emotions and behaviours).
