At Horsham West and Haven Primary School, Mathematics - like English - is a core component of the curriculum. Students participate in approximately five hours of Mathematics instruction each week, during which they build their knowledge, skills, and conceptual understanding. Our curriculum is designed around the four interrelated proficiencies: Fluency, Problem Solving, Reasoning, and Understanding.
We implement a structured and evidence-based teaching and learning approach that includes:
Daily Review of previously taught concepts to strengthen retention and address the curve of forgetting,
Whole-class explicit instruction of new content, and
Independent practice, all of which follows the gradual release model: "I do, we do, you do."
Our teaching practices are aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model, incorporating both the four Elements of Learning and the four Elements of Teaching into every lesson. This ensures a consistent, high-quality educational experience that supports every student in achieving mathematical success.
We support all students to achieve a high standard of proficiency in Mathematics. Our comprehensive curriculum is organised by six strands – Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability.
Lessons in Mathematics are carefully planned and based on the Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) model. This means that teachers explain and model new concepts and skills before guiding students to practise new skills in an interactive and responsive environment.
We differentiate the curriculum within each sub-strand based on the achievement standard results and create a tailored paper-based and online curriculum for each student, group or class.
My Numeracy acts as a formative assessment model with an interactive teaching and learning function that enables each student to progress through each proficiency standard of each achievement standard of the curriculum.
