At Horsham West and Haven, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is delivered as a comprehensive, year-long specialist program for all students from Foundation to Year 6. Each class participates in a dedicated 50-minute lesson each week, providing consistent and meaningful engagement with digital technologies. The program is designed to foster students’ confidence, creativity, and digital capability.
Students are taught to see technology as a powerful learning tool that can support them in planning, creating, and sharing their ideas in purposeful ways. Across all year levels, students learn to identify and use digital hardware and software components appropriately, and are introduced to the responsible and safe use of technology in online environments. Topics such as digital citizenship, cyber safety, and personal data protection are explicitly taught, supporting students to become respectful users of technology.
Keyboarding is introduced progressively, with students participating in structured touch-typing lessons that build their familiarity with the keyboard layout, finger placement, and typing fluency. These skills help develop efficiency in written communication.
Throughout the program, students also learn to customise digital tools to suit their needs. They are introduced to a range of built-in accessibility features and settings on iPads to help improve their productivity, independence, and confidence when using technology. This includes adjusting text size, using text-to-speech tools, and organising digital workspaces.
Using a variety of content creation apps, students are encouraged to demonstrate their learning in multimodal ways. This includes creating digital posters, narrated videos, animated presentations, visual mind maps, and interactive eBooks. These projects help students to think critically, organise information, and communicate their understandings using images, video, audio, and text. As they progress through the year levels, students are introduced to foundational programming and coding concepts using age-appropriate platforms, supporting problem-solving skills.
